Luck Cycle (Da Yun)

The core of the Bazi temporal system -- each pillar represents ten years, with the starting age calculated from the days before or after the birth Solar Term, representing the overall fortune of each life stage.

What Is the Luck Cycle (Da Yun)?

The Luck Cycle is the most important temporal projection tool in Bazi analysis, representing the overall fortune tone for every ten-year period of life. The Luck Cycle is like the broad backdrop of life -- when the Luck Cycle is good, overall opportunities abound; when the Luck Cycle is poor, even a good Annual Luck cannot fully express itself.

How to Calculate the Luck Cycle

Starting (Qiyun)

Starting (Qiyun) refers to the point in time when a person's first Major Luck Cycle begins to take effect. Before Qiyun, the person is in the Minor Luck Cycle period (Xiao Yun, also called Xing Nian / Annual Luck), using the Minor Luck Cycle stem-branch as the fortune reference; after Qiyun, the person officially enters the influence of the Major Luck Cycle.

The starting time is expressed as an age (precise to month and day). The system displays this as "Starting Luck: X years X months after birth."

Starting Age

The starting age is calculated from the number of days between the birth date and the nearest Solar Term:

  • Male born in a Yang year (Yang year, forward count) / Female born in a Yin year (Yin year, forward count): Days from birth to the next Solar Term / 3 = starting age
  • Male born in a Yin year (Yin year, backward count) / Female born in a Yang year (Yang year, backward count): Days from birth to the previous Solar Term / 3 = starting age

Mnemonic rule: Yang male, Yin female -- count forward; Yin male, Yang female -- count backward.

Luck Cycle Stem-Branch

Starting from the Month Pillar's Stem-Branch, advance in the forward or backward direction to derive the Stem-Branch of each subsequent pillar (10 years):

  • Forward progression: The Stem-Branch after the Month Pillar is the first Luck Cycle
  • Backward progression: The Stem-Branch before the Month Pillar is the first Luck Cycle

Structure of the Luck Cycle

Each Luck Cycle pillar spans 10 years, divided into:

  • First 5 years: The Luck Cycle's Heavenly Stem governs (first half)
  • Last 5 years: The Luck Cycle's Earthly Branch governs (second half)

In practical analysis, both Stem and Branch exert influence simultaneously, only with different emphasis.

Interaction Between the Luck Cycle and the Natal Chart

When the Luck Cycle Stem-Branch enters the natal chart, it will:

  • Generate or control the chart's Ten Gods: Shifting the power balance between Favorable and Unfavorable Gods
  • Punish, clash, or unite with the chart's Stems and Branches: Activating or damaging certain Palace Positions
  • Alter chart strength and weakness: A Luck Cycle strong in Seal and Peer can turn a Weak Day Master strong; a Luck Cycle heavy in Wealth and Officer gives a Strong Day Master a stage to perform on

Judging the Fortune of a Luck Cycle

  • Favorable God Luck Cycle: These ten years are a favorable period in life; career and relationships develop well
  • Unfavorable God Luck Cycle: These ten years are an adverse period; one should be conservative and steady
  • Neutral Luck Cycle: Plain and maintaining the status quo

The Importance of the Luck Cycle

"A good destiny is not as good as good luck" -- the Luck Cycle is the core of Destiny Analysis and the primary tool for judging the highs and lows of fortune across life's stages.
