What Is "Trigger/Activation" (Yin Dong)?
Trigger/Activation (Yin Dong) is an extremely important concept in Bazi. It refers to the process by which the Stems and Branches of the Luck Cycle or Annual Luck, through relationships such as punishments, clashes, unions, and harms, activate Stems and Branches that were originally latent (static) in the natal chart, causing their energy to manifest and thereby triggering actual events.
The natal chart is like a static script; the annual cycles are like a trigger. Without activation, the information in the natal chart is only latent potential; with activation, that potential is converted into real-world events.
The Main Modes of Activation

The Intensity of Activation
- Clash (Chong) produces the strongest activation, with the most conspicuous events
- Union (He) produces the next strongest activation, generally bringing new opportunities
- Punishment (Xing) often brings disputes or troubles
- Filling the Void (Tian Shi): Reactivates the originally voided Stem-Branch, often accompanied by unexpected changes
The Directionality of Activation
Activation not only triggers but also has directionality:
- The Annual Luck's Favorable God activates the natal chart's Favorable God → Auspicious events manifest
- The Annual Luck's Unfavorable God activates the natal chart's Unfavorable God → Inauspicious events manifest
- The Annual Luck's Favorable God activates the natal chart's Unfavorable God → Inauspicious with resolution; complex outcome
Practical Application of Activation
- The natal chart contains latent information about a certain event (e.g., marriage star, wealth star, office star)
- The Luck Cycle places this information within an effective time frame
- The Annual Luck / Monthly Luck activates that Stem-Branch → The event occurs in that year/month
Activation and Response Timing
Activation is the core of Response Timing (Ying Qi) judgment -- one first identifies which Stem-Branch in the natal chart represents a particular event, then determines when the annual cycles will activate that Stem-Branch, thereby pinpointing the event's timing.
