What Is "Response Timing" (Ying Qi)?
Response Timing (Ying Qi) is the core technique in Bazi prediction for determining when an event will occur. The natal chart already contains the "information" for certain events (e.g., the marriage star, wealth star, or office star is in motion); Response Timing analysis determines in which year and which month the event will happen.
The Logic of Response Timing Judgment
Response Timing follows the principle of "layered overlay":
- Luck Cycle (Da Yun): Establishes the ten-year macro context, determining whether the foundational conditions for a certain event exist during that decade
- Annual Luck (Liu Nian): Within the Luck Cycle framework, identifies the year in which the key Stem-Branch is activated
- Monthly Luck (Liu Yue): Within the Annual Luck framework, pinpoints the specific month in which the event materializes
With three layers of overlay, the more layers that converge, the more precise the Response Timing.
Common Response Timing Signals
| Signal | Significance |
|---|---|
| Annual Luck clashes a key natal chart Branch | The event represented by the clashed Branch occurs |
| Annual Luck unites with a key natal chart Stem-Branch | Brings the opportunity corresponding to that Stem-Branch |
| Annual Luck fills a voided Branch (Tian Shi) | A previously voided matter materializes |
| Annual Luck reveals a Hidden Stem in the chart | A concealed Stem surfaces; the event manifests |
| Luck Cycle and Annual Luck both show a certain Ten God | Dual overlay; that Ten God's event is bound to occur |
A Framework for Response Timing Analysis: Marriage
Using marriage Response Timing as an example:
- The natal chart contains a marriage star (Direct Officer / Direct Wealth) in a rooted and strong position
- The Luck Cycle enters a marriage-star cycle (an Officer cycle or Wealth cycle)
- The Annual Luck shows the marriage star being activated (clash, union, or emergence of Hidden Stem)
- The Monthly Luck further confirms the specific month
Margin of Error in Response Timing
- Response Timing judgments carry a margin of error of 1–2 years (especially near Luck Cycle transition years)
- Monthly-level Response Timing requires exceptionally clear natal chart information to be accurate
- External environmental factors can also influence the actual timing of events
Response Timing and Filling the Void
When a voided Stem-Branch is filled by the Annual Luck, it is also an important Response Timing signal -- an opportunity that was previously void and insubstantial is realized in the filling year.
