What Is "Filling the Void" (Tian Shi)?
Filling the Void (Tian Shi) is an important concept within the Bazi annual cycle system. It refers to the situation in which the Earthly Branch of a Luck Cycle or Annual Luck matches a Void (Kong Wang) Earthly Branch in the natal chart, re-activating the originally "voided" Stem-Branch and enabling its energy to manifest. A voided Stem-Branch's force is normally suppressed; when filled, it may instead erupt with considerable power.
The Principle of Filling the Void
An Earthly Branch in Void (Xun Kong) is energetically weakened in the natal chart -- but when the Luck Cycle or Annual Luck presents the same Earthly Branch as the voided one, that Branch is "filled" (Tian Shi), and its energy transitions from empty to solid:
- Originally voided Nobleman stars, Wealth stars, Officer stars, etc., are activated
- Originally voided inauspicious Sha (spiritual indicators) may also be activated (requires holistic assessment)
Two Scenarios of Filling the Void
1. Auspicious star filled (Favorable/Useful God is filled)
The originally voided Favorable/Useful God is activated -- this year often brings unexpectedly positive opportunities, and long-anticipated matters finally come to fruition.
Example: If the Direct Officer (Zheng Guan) in the natal chart resides in a voided Earthly Branch, the year of filling may bring an important promotion opportunity.
2. Inauspicious star filled (Unfavorable God is filled)
A previously weakened inauspicious Sha is activated -- the year may bring unexpected peril or difficulty.
Example: If Robbery Sha (Jie Sha) is in void, the year of filling warrants attention to financial and personal safety.
Filling the Void and "Exiting the Void"
Another form of activation is Exiting the Void (Chu Kong): Void status is naturally resolved as the Luck Cycle transitions to a new Xun (10-day/10-year sexagenary block). When the chart owner enters a new Luck Cycle pillar, the Xun Kong configuration may change, and the previously voided Earthly Branch is no longer in void.
Practical Application of Filling the Void
- Identify which Earthly Branches in the natal chart are in Void
- Analyze which Ten God or Six Relation the voided Earthly Branch represents
- Determine when the Luck Cycle or Annual Luck will fill that Earthly Branch
- Forecast the dynamics of that Ten God or Six Relation during the filling year
Important Notes
Filling the Void is not always auspicious -- filling a Favorable God is auspicious; filling an Unfavorable God is inauspicious. The assessment must integrate the natal chart's overall favorable/unfavorable configuration.
