What is a Southern Hemisphere Bazi chart?
A Southern Hemisphere Bazi chart is the calendrical correction applied when casting a chart for someone born in the Southern Hemisphere (Australia, New Zealand, South America, South Africa, etc.). The conclusion is a single sentence:
The Year, Day, and Hour pillars are identical to the Northern Hemisphere — only the Month Pillar needs adjusting.
The Month Pillar is the one pillar that encodes seasonal warmth and cold, and the seasons are exactly reversed between hemispheres — when it is high summer in the north, it is deep winter in the south. Only the pillar that carries seasonal energy needs to flip.
A unifying test: does the encoded quantity reverse sign across latitude?
Each pillar anchors a different projection of the Earth's motion. Whether a pillar flips depends solely on whether the physical quantity it encodes reverses sign in the Southern Hemisphere:

Of the four, only the Month Pillar encodes "seasonal insolation," so only it flips.
Pillar by pillar
Year Pillar — same as the Northern Hemisphere
The year turns at Lichun (Beginning of Spring), the instant the Sun reaches ecliptic longitude 315°. Ecliptic longitude is an absolute coordinate on the celestial sphere — at any given instant it has one single value for the entire Earth, so the Sun's longitude seen from the south is exactly the same as from the north.
Note the subtlety: the Year and Month pillars both come from the Earth's orbit, but they take two different projections — the year takes ecliptic longitude (celestial, absolute, globally uniform), while the month takes surface heating (relative to local latitude, reversed north to south). One orbit, two projections: the year is global, the month is flipped.
In chart terms, the Year Pillar represents ancestry and the broad environment — a shared calendrical marker (everyone born in the same year shares a Year Pillar), so it should be globally uniform.
Month Pillar — flip to the opposite branch, re-derive the stem
This is the only part of a Southern Hemisphere chart that changes, and the most important step.
The month branch corresponds to the "Month Command" defined by the 24 solar terms, and its meaning in chart reading is local warmth and cold: Yin-Mao-Chen is spring (Wood peaks), Si-Wu-Wei is summer (Fire peaks), Shen-You-Xu is autumn (Metal peaks), Hai-Zi-Chou is winter (Water peaks). The physical root is the obliquity of the ecliptic (~23.5°), which moves the Sun's subsolar point between the tropics and reverses insolation between hemispheres:
- At the northern summer solstice (Wu month, midsummer, Fire peaks), the south is in deep winter (Zi month, midwinter, Water peaks);
- At northern Lichun (Yin month, early spring), the south is around Liqiu (Shen month, early autumn).
So the Southern Hemisphere month branch is flipped by 6 positions to its opposite branch:

After flipping the branch, the stem cannot be carried over — it must be re-derived from "Year Stem + new month branch" using the Five Tigers rule (Wu Hu Dun), so that the four pillars still land on a valid Sixty-Jiazi combination. For example, a Bing-Yin month in a Jia year (north) becomes Shen month in the south, which the Five Tigers rule resolves to Ren-Shen — both stem and branch change.
Day Pillar — same as the Northern Hemisphere
The Day Pillar comes from stem-branch day-counting — an unbroken sequence running from antiquity (Jiazi, Yichou … a cycle of 60). It hangs on the Earth's rotation for the day boundary but encodes nothing that varies with latitude. On a given calendar day, the whole world shares one day pillar (with the local Zi hour marking the day change).
In chart terms, the Day Pillar is the Day Master (the self) and the spouse palace — an identity marker of "who I am," unrelated to season, with nothing to flip.
Hour Pillar — same as the Northern Hemisphere, only true solar time
The hour branch is set by the Sun's apparent-time position within a day: Zi is midnight, Wu is noon. This quantity is in phase across hemispheres — north or south, noon is the moment the Sun crosses the local meridian at its highest (in the south the Sun culminates to the north, in the north to the south, but "culmination = Wu hour" holds either way). The day–night rhythm does not reverse with hemisphere.
The only correction the Hour Pillar needs is true solar time, which is a longitude (east–west) matter — orthogonal to latitude / hemisphere (north–south); the two are independent.
The one-line takeaway
The obliquity of the ecliptic reverses only the "seasonal insolation" layer across latitude, and among the four pillars only the Month Pillar encodes season. The Year takes orbital phase (absolute), the Day takes a continuous count (convention), and the Hour takes diurnal phase (in phase) — all three are independent of hemisphere.
Therefore: flip ⟺ encodes season ⟺ only the Month Pillar changes.
Schools of thought
There is no single consensus on Southern Hemisphere charting. Three main positions exist:
- No adjustment — the stem-branch calendar is a convention, uniform worldwide, unaffected by geography;
- Adjust the Month Pillar (used here) — Bazi reads seasonal energy, the southern seasons are reversed, so the Month Pillar flips;
- Adjust the Day and Hour too — a rare minority view with little acceptance.
