What Is the Month Command?
The Month Command (Yueling) is the Earthly Branch of the Month Pillar — the branch component of the Month Pillar among the Four Pillars of Bazi. Because the Month Command represents the seasonal moment of birth when the qi of heaven and earth is at its full command, it carries the greatest force in a Bazi chart and is known as the "commander of the Five Elements' strength."
The Month Command determines which elemental qi is in command during the birth month, in turn affecting the relative strength of all Stems and Branches in the chart. The first step in judging whether the Day Master is strong or weak is to see whether the Day Master receives support from the Month Command (Deling).
Relationship Between the Month Command and Solar Terms
Bazi uses Solar Terms (not lunar calendar months) as month boundaries, with the "Jie" (node) marking the start of each month:

The Central Role of the Month Command in Destiny Analysis
- Seasonal Support (Deling): When the Day Master's element is the same as the Month Command's commanding element, or when the Month Command generates the Day Master, this is called "Seasonal Support" (Deling) — the Day Master receives the power of the Month Command, resulting in a Strong Day Master.
- Chart Structure Determination (Quge): Standard Chart Structures (Zhengge) are determined based on the Hidden Stems of the Month Command. When a Hidden Stem in the Month Command reveals itself on a Heavenly Stem, a Chart Structure can be established.
- Reference System for Element Strength: The Month Command is the baseline for judging the strength or weakness of all Five Elements in the chart. All other Earthly Branches and Heavenly Stems are assessed relative to the Month Command.
Hidden Stems and the Commander Within the Month Command
The Month Command branch also conceals multiple Heavenly Stems (Hidden Stems, Canggan). During different segments within a month, different Hidden Stems act as "commander" (Siling) — assuming authority with the greatest force. This system is called the "Human Element Commander" (Renyuan Siling) and is a more refined tool for judging the strength of the Five Elements.
