Hidden Stems (Canggan)

The Heavenly Stems concealed within each Earthly Branch — the intrinsic source and refined expression of a branch's Five Elements energy.

What Are Hidden Stems?

Hidden Stems (Canggan), also known as "Stems Hidden Within Branches," refer to one or more Heavenly Stems concealed within each Earthly Branch. On the surface, a branch represents a single Five Elements property, but internally it conceals multiple Heavenly Stems, and these Hidden Stems determine the composition and relative strength distribution of the branch's Five Elements energy.

For example, the Earthly Branch Yin superficially belongs to the Wood element, but internally it conceals three Heavenly Stems — Jia Wood (Primary Qi), Bing Fire (Secondary Qi), and Wu Earth (Remaining Qi) — each with different proportional strength.

Functions of Hidden Stems

  1. Foundation for Ten Gods Calculation: Generating and controlling relationships also exist between the Day Master and Hidden Stems, from which the Ten Gods within each branch are derived — this is key to determining the nature of each branch.
  2. Basis for Root Connection (Tonggen): When a Heavenly Stem finds the same elemental qi among a branch's Hidden Stems, this is called "Root Connection" — the deeper the root, the stronger the stem's power.
  3. Prerequisite for Stem Revelation (Tougan): When a Hidden Stem is activated by a Luck Cycle or Annual Luck and corresponds to a Heavenly Stem, it forms a "Stem Revelation" and its power increases substantially.

Distinction Between Primary Qi, Secondary Qi, and Remaining Qi

  • Primary Qi (Benqi): The strongest, constitutes the main body of the branch's Five Elements, closely related to the Month Command's authority.
  • Secondary Qi (Zhongqi): Medium strength, often the commanding qi during a Month Command's segmented period.
  • Remaining Qi (Yuqi): The weakest, being the residual qi from the preceding Solar Term.

When Primary Qi reveals itself on a Heavenly Stem, the impact on the chart is greatest; when Remaining Qi reveals itself, the impact is smaller but still cannot be ignored.

Factors Determining How Many Stems Are Hidden

The twelve Earthly Branches contain varying numbers of Hidden Stems, which is directly related to their directional positioning as "Cardinal / Corner / Storage":

  • Four Cardinal Directions (Zi, Wu, Mao, You): Located at the four cardinal positions, their qi is the purest; each branch conceals only one Primary Qi (Wu is a slight exception), with concentrated, unmixed energy.
  • Four Corners (Yin, Shen, Si, Hai): Located at the four diagonal corner positions and serving as hubs of seasonal transition, they contain the most Hidden Stems (three qi layers each), with richly layered energy.
  • Four Storage / Tombs (Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei): Earth branches that also serve as storage repositories for the Five Elements, their Hidden Stem structure falls between that of the Cardinal and Corner branches, combining a storage function.

Once the positioning of the Four Cardinal Directions, Four Corners, and Four Storages is understood, the patterns in the Hidden Stems table become clear at a glance.
