What Is Stem Revelation?
Stem Revelation (Tougan) refers to the phenomenon where a Heavenly Stem concealed within an Earthly Branch appears on a Heavenly Stem position — either in the same pillar or an adjacent pillar. The Hidden Stem is then said to have "revealed" or "emerged" (Tougan). Stem Revelation means that energy internal to the branch has been visibly expressed outward, transforming its influence on the chart from latent to manifest.
For example, if a chart's Month Pillar is "Jia-Yin" — Yin conceals Jia, and the Month Stem happens also to be Jia — then Jia Wood has revealed itself from the branch onto a Heavenly Stem. This is called the Month Command's Primary Qi revealing itself, and it carries the greatest force.
Significance of Stem Revelation
- Formation of Chart Structure (Geju): The core rule for determining standard Bazi Structures (Zhengge) is whether a Hidden Stem of the Month Command reveals itself on a Heavenly Stem. The Month Command's Hidden Stems represent the qi of the Month Command; once revealed, the corresponding Ten God can be used to define the Chart Structure (e.g., if the Month Command conceals Geng and Geng Metal reveals, one of the standard structures is established).
- Manifest vs. Hidden Useful Gods: When a Useful God reveals itself on a Heavenly Stem, it is a "manifest Useful God" (Ming Yongshen) and can exert its function directly. If it is merely concealed within a branch, it is a "hidden Useful God" (An Yongshen), whose power is constrained and requires activation before it can function.
- Amplification of Ten Gods: When a Ten God's Heavenly Stem is revealed and also has a Root Connection in the branches, that Ten God is at maximum power and exerts the greatest influence on the chart.
Conditions for Stem Revelation
- Same-Pillar Revelation: The Hidden Stem matches the Heavenly Stem of the same pillar — the strongest form of revelation, e.g., a Yin pillar with Jia as its Heavenly Stem (Jia-Yin). Jia Wood is revealed.
- Cross-Pillar Revelation: The Hidden Stem matches a Heavenly Stem in a different pillar — somewhat weaker in force, but still considered a revelation.

A concealed Ten God is normally not easily activated, but when the Heavenly Stem of a Luck Cycle or Annual Luck matches it, the activation triggers its emergence — at which point the previously concealed god begins to exert its influence.
