Heavenly Stems

The ten Heavenly Stems (Tiangan): Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui. They form the upper half of the Four Pillars in Bazi, each with its own Yin-Yang polarity, Five Element attribute, and rich symbolic imagery.

What Are the Heavenly Stems?

The Heavenly Stems (Tiangan) are one of the fundamental timekeeping symbols in the traditional Chinese calendar. There are ten in total: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui. In a Bazi (Four Pillars of Destiny) chart, each of the four pillars — Year, Month, Day, and Hour — contains one Heavenly Stem, collectively known as the "Four Stems." They represent the visible, outward layer of energy. The Day Stem (the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar) is called the Day Master (Riyuan), which represents the person themselves; all Ten Gods relationships are calculated relative to the Day Master.

Relationships Among the Heavenly Stems

The Heavenly Stems interact through the Five Unions (e.g., Jia-Ji combine into Earth), Clashes (e.g., Jia-Geng clash), and mutual controlling relationships. Unions and transformations alter Five Element attributes, while clashes trigger dynamic change — these interactions directly influence the auspicious or inauspicious trajectories of Luck Cycles and Annual Luck.

How to Use Stem Symbolism

In Destiny Analysis, Heavenly Stem symbolism is primarily used for:

  1. Inferring career direction: The most robust Heavenly Stem Five Element in a chart points to the occupational domain where the person has a natural advantage.
  2. Analyzing personality: The symbolism of the Day Master stem reveals the person's core personality (e.g., a Jia Wood Day Master tends toward uprightness; a Ren Water Day Master toward strategic wisdom).
  3. Inferring life events: The stem symbolism of Annual Luck and Luck Cycle stems can indicate the general direction of a given year's primary activities and concerns.
