Five Elements

The five elemental properties of Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth and their generating and controlling cycles, covering symbolic correspondences, directions, the human body, colors, and practical applications.

What Are the Five Elements?

The Five Elements (Wuxing) are a system in traditional Chinese philosophy that classifies all phenomena into five fundamental properties: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. The Five Elements denote not five concrete substances, but five types of energy states or movement tendencies: Wood represents upward growth and expansion; Fire represents outward diffusion; Earth represents centered stability; Metal represents inward contraction and consolidation; Water represents downward concealment and depth.

The Generating Cycle (Xiangsheng)

The Generating Cycle represents a nourishing, promoting relationship, following the order: Wood generates Fire → Fire generates Earth → Earth generates Metal → Metal generates Water → Water generates Wood.

  • Wood generates Fire: Wood burns to produce fire
  • Fire generates Earth: Fire reduces to ash, forming earth
  • Earth generates Metal: Ore is nurtured within the earth
  • Metal generates Water: Metal condenses moisture when cooled
  • Water generates Wood: Water nourishes the growth of wood

In Bazi, when the Day Master is generated by another element, this is called "receiving generation" (Desheng), which contributes to a Strong Day Master; when the Useful God is generated, fortune flows smoothly.

The Controlling Cycle (Xiangke)

The Controlling Cycle represents a restraining, consuming relationship, following the order: Wood controls Earth → Earth controls Water → Water controls Fire → Fire controls Metal → Metal controls Wood.

  • Wood controls Earth: Tree roots penetrate soil
  • Earth controls Water: Embankments contain water flow
  • Water controls Fire: Water extinguishes fire
  • Fire controls Metal: Fire melts metal
  • Metal controls Wood: An axe fells a tree

A controlling relationship is not necessarily harmful. When the controlling element is itself controlled (restrained control), its force is weak; when the controlling element is in a position of power, its impact is strong.

Degrees of Generation and Control

The actual force of generating and controlling relationships is affected by multiple factors: distance (adjacent pillars exert stronger influence), waxing and waning (a prosperous element generates or controls with greater force), and Combination and Transformation (combined elements may not control each other). When the Five Elements circulate smoothly, generation and control flow without obstruction; when two elements clash without a Bridge (Tongguan) element, the chart becomes clogged, requiring a third-party element to mediate — this is called "Bridge / Mediating Element."

Strength, Weakness, Favorability, and Unfavorability

The relative abundance of the Five Elements in a chart determines its strength-weakness configuration. If a particular element is excessively strong, it requires controlling or draining elements to restore balance; if an element is excessively weak, it needs nourishing and supporting elements to supplement it. This logic runs throughout the entire Useful God (Yongshen) system: first assess Five Elements balance, then determine the Favorable Gods and Unfavorable Gods.

The Five Elements and the Four Seasons

The Five Elements correspond closely to the Four Seasons: Wood prospers in spring (Yin and Mao months), Fire prospers in summer (Si and Wu months), Metal prospers in autumn (Shen and You months), Water prospers in winter (Hai and Zi months), and Earth prospers during the last 18 days of each season (Chen, Xu, Chou, Wei months). The element in command during a given Month Command possesses the greatest force and is the key basis for judging whether the Day Master has Seasonal Support.
