What Is Flow / Circulation?
Flow / Circulation (Liu Tong) is a core concept in Blind School (Mang Pai) Bazi analysis, referring to the smooth, unobstructed circulation of the Five Elements' energy within a destiny chart. Just as a river must flow freely and without hindrance, the Five Elements' energy in a chart must also generate, control, and circulate smoothly in order for its potential to be fully realized.
Basic Principles of Circulation
The directional flow of Five Elements energy within the chart:
Smooth Generating Circulation: A → B → C (A generates B, B generates C, energy transmits smoothly)
For example: Resource / Seal (Yin Shou, generates Day Master) → Day Master (Ri Yuan, generates Output / Expression) → Output / Expression (Shi Shang, generates Wealth) → Wealth (Cai, generates Officer) → Officer (Guan, generates Seal) — the Five Elements generate one another in a circulating cycle.
Controlling Within to Derive Utility: A → B ← C (A controls B, C generates B, forming a balanced circulation)
For example: Seven Killings (Qi Sha) control the Day Master, while Output God (Shi Shen) controls the Seven Killings; the three form a path of controlling and balancing circulation.
Obstacles to Circulation
The main problems affecting circulation in a chart:
- Controlling Blockade: A generates B, but B is controlled by C — the energy flow stops at B.
- Punishment & Clash (Xing Chong) Damage: Earthly Branch punishments and clashes rupture the Five Elements' structure, obstructing circulation.
- Mixed and Chaotic Interference: Too many Five Elements appearing simultaneously cause energies to collide with one another, preventing smooth flow.
Characteristics of Charts with Good Circulation
A chart with good circulation features:
- Clear chains of Five Elements generation
- Clear Work Production (Zuo Gong) pathways (Essence & Function / Ti Yong), with energy effectively output
- Luck Cycles (Da Yun) and Annual Luck (Liu Nian) follow the momentum and advance smoothly, with accurate Response Timing (Ying Qi)
Circulation and Blind School Work Production
The Blind School particularly emphasizes "Work Production" (Zuo Gong) — the value of a chart lies not in whether the Five Elements are balanced, but in whether energy can smoothly "produce work" (achieve objectives). Circulation is the foundational condition for Work Production: when circulation is good, Work Production efficiency is high; when circulation is poor, Work Production is obstructed.
