What Is a Bridge / Mediating Element?
A Bridge or Mediating Element (Tong Guan) is a method in BaZi analysis for resolving stalemates between opposing Five Elements. When two elements in a chart stand in a deadlock of mutual control, with energy caught in an impasse, a third element is needed to mediate at the center, dissolve the control battle, and allow energy to resume smooth circulation — this third element is called the "Bridge Useful God" (Tong Guan Yong Shen).
The Principle of Mediation
When two Five Elements stand in mutual control, an intermediary element can resolve the conflict:

Concrete Application of Mediation
Wood vs Earth Standoff Example: A chart with strong Jia-Yi Wood (Day Master or abundant Peers / Bi Jie) and strong Chen-Xu-Chou-Wei Earth (abundant Wealth stars) forms a deadlock — Wood controls Earth, but the Earth is heavy and thick, and both sides are stuck. Using Fire as the Bridge: Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth — energy circulates smoothly, and Wealth fortune can be realized.
Conditions for Effective Mediation
The Bridge Useful God must be powerful and revealed (Tou Gan) or have roots (You Gen) in the chart in order to effectively channel the two opposing forces. If the mediating element is extremely weak and lacks the power to mediate at the center, the deadlock will persist.
Mediating Element and Useful God
The Bridge Useful God is often simultaneously the chart's Favorable God (Xi Shen) — in a standoff structure, the element capable of acting as a mediator is precisely the key to resolving the chart's contradictions. Walking a Luck Cycle (Da Yun) governed by the Bridge Useful God is typically the best period for the chart-holder's career and wealth.
Consequences of Failed Mediation
If a chart lacks any mediating element, the two strong deities clash and control each other directly — this is called a "Control Battle" (Ke Zhan): the energies drain each other, and the chart-holder typically experiences extreme resistance in that life domain, with Work Production (Zuo Gong) efficiency at its lowest.
