What Is Root Connection?
Root Connection (Tonggen) refers to the situation where a Heavenly Stem finds, among a branch's Hidden Stems, a stem sharing the same Five Elements or the same Yin-Yang polarity. The stem is then said to have a "root connection to that branch." Root Connection is one of the key indicators for measuring the strength of a Heavenly Stem — with root, stable; without root, floating.
For example, if a chart contains the Jia Wood Heavenly Stem, and the Earthly Branches contain Yin (which conceals Jia Wood) or Hai (which conceals Jia Wood), then Jia Wood has a root connection and its power has a basis of support.
Types of Root Connection
By Hidden Stem Rank
- Primary Qi Root: The stem matches the branch's Primary Qi — the strongest root connection. E.g., Jia Wood rooting in Yin (Yin conceals Jia as Primary Qi).
- Secondary Qi Root: The stem matches the branch's Secondary Qi — intermediate strength.
- Remaining Qi Root: The stem matches the branch's Remaining Qi — weakest, still counts as a root but with limited impact.
By Yin-Yang Polarity
- Same-Polarity Root: Jia Wood rooting in Yin (Jia is Yang Wood, Yin conceals Yang Jia Wood) — strongest force.
- Opposite-Polarity Root: e.g., Yi Wood rooting in Yin (Yin conceals Jia, not Yi). Some schools consider this a valid root, though with somewhat reduced force.
Significance of Root Connection
- Judging Day Master Strength: Whether the Day Stem has a root connection is one of the fundamental conditions for judging a Strong or Weak Day Master. A rooted Day Stem receives the power of Branch Support (Dedi).
- Judging the Power of Each Pillar's Stem: The Year Stem, Month Stem, and Hour Stem must likewise be assessed for root connection. A rooted stem in any pillar can play a more substantial role.
- Complement to Stem Revelation: When a Hidden Stem emerges onto a Heavenly Stem, it is "Stem Revelation" (Tougan); when a Heavenly Stem finds its foundation downward in the branches, it is "Root Connection." The two are the exterior and interior aspects of each other.
Characteristics of Rootless Heavenly Stems
A Heavenly Stem without a root is called a "floating stem" (Fugan). It is light and insubstantial, unstable, and easily transformed through Combination or scattered by Clash. In the analysis of favorable and unfavorable gods, a floating Useful God struggles to play a sustained role; in Annual Luck / Luck Cycle analysis, a floating stem is more easily altered by the clashes and combinations of a given year.
