Chart Strength

Using the Day Master as the reference point, determine whether the chart is strong or weak through Seasonal Support (De Ling), Branch Support (De Di), and Stem Support (De Shi) — the foundational prerequisite for selecting the Useful God and evaluating chart structure.

What Is the Chart Strength System?

The Chart Strength (Qiang Ruo) system is the methodology in Bazi (Four Pillars of Destiny) analysis that uses the Day Master as its object of evaluation, comprehensively assessing the strength of its energy within the destiny chart. The Day Master represents the chart-holder themselves. Determining whether the Day Master is strong (Shen Qiang) or weak (Shen Ruo) is the prerequisite for identifying the direction of the Useful God — a strong Day Master requires Restrain, Drain, and Consume (Ke Xie Hao) to achieve balance; a weak Day Master needs Nourish and Support (Sheng Fu) to supplement it.

Three Dimensions for Determining a Strong Day Master

DimensionExplanationAssessment Criteria
De Ling (Seasonal Support)Whether the Day Master receives support from the Month CommandThe Month Branch is of the same element as or a generating element for the Day Master
De Di (Branch Support)Whether the Day Master has root connections in the Earthly BranchesThe Hidden Stems within the Earthly Branches contain the same Five Element as the Day Master
De Shi (Stem Support)Whether the Heavenly Stems contain same-element or supporting elements for the Day MasterAn abundance of Peer (Bi Jian), Rival (Jie Cai), Direct Seal (Zheng Yin), and Indirect Seal (Pian Yin)

The Significance of Strong vs. Weak Day Master

  • Strong Day Master (Shen Qiang): The Day Master has roots and strength, capable of bearing Wealth and Authority. However, if excessively strong, it requires Restrain, Drain, Consume to achieve balance; otherwise, Wealth and Authority are suppressed, and talents have no avenue for expression.
  • Weak Day Master (Shen Ruo): The Day Master lacks roots and support. However, as long as Seals and Peers are potent, nobility is still attainable. If extremely weak with no support at all, the chart may enter a Following Structure.
  • Follow Strong (Cong Qiang): The Day Master is extremely strong; the entire chart follows this propensity. This belongs to the Specialized Prosperity Structure category and is treated as a Special Structure rather than an ordinary strong chart.
  • Follow Weak (Cong Ruo): The Day Master is extremely weak and rootless; the entire chart follows the prevailing deity. This belongs to the Following Structure category.

Relationship Between Chart Strength and the Useful God

The Chart Strength system is the foundation for selecting the Useful God. Basic principles:

  1. Shen Qiang → Use Officer/Killing to restrain, Output to drain excess, Wealth to consume the Day Master
  2. Shen Ruo → Use Seal to generate the Day Master, Peer to support the Day Master
  3. Cong Qiang → Follow the flow; use elements that generate and support the prevailing deity
  4. Cong Ruo → Follow the flow; comply with the strongest element in the entire chart

The precision with which chart strength is determined directly affects the correctness of Useful God selection — this is the core foundational skill of Bazi analysis.

Chart Strength Levels on Lingxi Wendao

Lingxi Wendao quantifies chart strength into 9 graduated levels, arranged from weakest to strongest:

LevelMeaning
Extremely WeakThe Day Master has almost no roots or support — may qualify as a Following Structure
Severely WeakThe Day Master is severely lacking in support; extremely low capacity to bear pressure
WeakInsufficient support for the Day Master; leaning clearly toward weakness
Slightly WeakThe Day Master is mildly deficient but retains some root
Balanced (Zhong He)The Day Master is in perfect equilibrium
Slightly StrongThe Day Master has a mild surplus; can still bear Wealth and Authority
StrongThe Day Master has deep roots and ample support
Severely StrongThe Day Master is extremely vigorous — draining (Output/Wealth) is preferred over direct restraint
Extremely StrongThe Day Master is overwhelmingly strong with no check — may qualify as a Specialized Prosperity Structure

Balanced (Zhong He) is the most ideal state, indicating that the Day Master is neither excessively strong nor weak, allowing Five Element energies to circulate freely.
