What Is the Day Master?
The Day Master (Ri Zhu), also called the "Day Stem" (Ri Yuan), is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar (the third pillar) in a Bazi chart. In the Bazi destiny analysis system, the Day Master represents the chart-holder themselves and serves as the core reference point for chart analysis — all derivations of the Ten Gods, assessments of chart strength, and analyses of chart structure center around the Day Master.
Importance of the Day Master
- Reference Point for Deriving the Ten Gods: Using the Day Master as the benchmark, analyze the Five Element relationships between the Day Master and the other Heavenly Stems and Hidden Stems in the chart to derive the Ten Gods: Peer (Bi Jian), Rival (Jie Cai), Output God (Shi Shen), Hurting Officer (Shang Guan), and so forth.
- Subject of Chart Strength Assessment: Determining whether a chart is "strong" (Shen Qiang) or "weak" (Shen Ruo) is precisely about assessing the strength of the Day Master (Ri Zhu).
- Center of Structure Analysis: The selection of the Useful God (Yong Shen), Favorable God (Xi Shen), Unfavorable God (Ji Shen), and others all revolves around what is most beneficial to the Day Master.
The Five Elements and Yin-Yang of the Day Master
The ten Heavenly Stems correspond to the Five Elements and Yin-Yang as follows:
| Heavenly Stem | Five Element | Yin-Yang |
|---|---|---|
| Jia | Wood | Yang |
| Yi | Wood | Yin |
| Bing | Fire | Yang |
| Ding | Fire | Yin |
| Wu | Earth | Yang |
| Ji | Earth | Yin |
| Geng | Metal | Yang |
| Xin | Metal | Yin |
| Ren | Water | Yang |
| Gui | Water | Yin |
Strength of the Day Master
The strength of the Day Master is determined by three dimensions:
- De Ling (Seasonal Support): Whether the Month Command (Month Branch) provides the thriving energy of the same Five Element
- De Di (Branch Support): Whether the Year, Month, Day, and Hour Branches contain root connections of the same Five Element
- De Shi (Stem Support): Whether supporting forces such as Peers and Seals are dominant in the chart
A strong Day Master is termed "Shen Qiang"; a weak Day Master is termed "Shen Ruo". This determination is the critical prerequisite for selecting the Useful God.
