What Are Heavenly Stem Clashes?
Heavenly Stem Clashes refer to the head-on clash relationships between pairs of Heavenly Stems that are six positions apart and share the same Five Element category (and the same Yin-Yang polarity). Heavenly Stem clashes represent direct collisions between two forces, often indicating upheaval, opposition, and conflict.
The Four Heavenly Stem Clashes
| Clash Pair | Element Relation | Nature of Clash |
|---|---|---|
| Jia clashes Geng | Wood clashes Metal | Metal controls Wood (Geng controls Jia) |
| Yi clashes Xin | Wood clashes Metal | Metal controls Wood (Xin controls Yi) |
| Bing clashes Ren | Fire clashes Water | Water controls Fire (Ren controls Bing) |
| Ding clashes Gui | Fire clashes Water | Water controls Fire (Gui controls Ding) |
Note: Wu and Ji Earth have no clashes (Earth occupies the center and has no opposing counterpart). Therefore, Heavenly Stems have only four clashes, while Earthly Branches have six.
Effects of Heavenly Stem Clashes
- Force agitation: When two Stems clash, they both stimulate and control each other, causing mutual depletion but also potentially generating kinetic energy.
- Clash-control relationship: As the table shows, Heavenly Stem clashes are essentially a form of "controlling." If the controller is stronger, the controlled is damaged; if forces are balanced, both sides suffer.
- Controlling the Unfavorable God: If the Unfavorable God Stem is clashed and controlled by the Favorable God Stem, it benefits the chart; conversely, if the Favorable God is clashed, it is unfavorable.
Difference from Earthly Branch Six Clashes
Heavenly Stems govern the "manifest"; Earthly Branches govern the "hidden." Heavenly Stem clashes have more direct and visible effects, often reflected in surface-level matters like career and interpersonal conflict. Earthly Branch Six Clashes involve deeper destabilization of inner foundations, with more far-reaching and lasting effects.
Important Notes
In Destiny Analysis, a clash does not equal an absolutely inauspicious sign. A clash can break a deadlock and trigger change -- sometimes it is precisely the opportunity to alter the status quo. Comprehensive judgment must incorporate favorable and unfavorable god analysis.
