Function Loop

When the Dominant and Tertiary functions form a short-circuit loop, bypassing the Auxiliary, the personality can stagnate or even distort -- this is the "Loop" phenomenon.

What is a Function Loop?

A normal cognitive function stack consists of Dominant → Auxiliary → Tertiary → Inferior, with the Auxiliary function serving as the core regulator. When a person bypasses the Auxiliary function and allows the Dominant to form a closed loop directly with the Tertiary, they have entered a Loop state.

Loops typically occur during periods of stress, disorientation, or prolonged emotional exhaustion.

Typical Loops by Type

INTJ / INFJ (Ni-Dominant)

  • Normal: Ni → Te/Fe
  • Loop: Ni → Fi/Ti
  • Presentation: Excessively ruminating on personal feelings internally (INTJ) or sinking into pure logic while losing awareness of others (INFJ); disconnected from the external world

ENTJ / ENFJ (Te/Fe-Dominant)

  • Loop: Te → Ni (ENTJ) or Fe → Ni (ENFJ)
  • Presentation: Action paralysis; caught in anxious predictions about the future; losing their usual drive

INTP / INFP (Ti/Fi-Dominant)

  • Loop: Ti → Si (INTP) or Fi → Si (INFP)
  • Presentation: Dwelling on the past; compulsively re-examining old memories and past pain; losing openness to new possibilities

ENTP / ENFP (Ne-Dominant)

  • Loop: Ne → Ti/Fi
  • Presentation: ENTPs spiral into a vortex of self-critical logic; ENFPs over-scrutinize their self-worth, becoming anxious and isolated

SJ Types (Si-Dominant)

  • Loop: Si → Fi/Ti
  • Presentation: ISTJ/ISFJ fall into negative internal value judgments, becoming overly critical of themselves and others

SP Types (Se-Dominant)

  • Loop: Se → Fi/Ti
  • Presentation: ESTPs become paralyzed by over-analyzing their own behavior through logic; ESFPs become excessively absorbed in their own emotions, losing external connection

How to Break Out of a Loop

  1. Recognize the state: Become aware that you are in a Loop, rather than believing this is "the real you"
  2. Activate the Auxiliary: Deliberately use the Auxiliary function -- INTJs force themselves to take action (Te), INTPs talk to others (Fe)
  3. Change your environment: Loops often happen in isolation; a change of setting or interacting with others can interrupt the cycle
  4. Physical intervention: Exercise and sensory stimulation can help break purely mental cycles

A Loop is not a character flaw -- it is a protective mechanism under overload. Understanding it is the first step toward breaking free from internal friction.
