Basic Properties of Chou Earth
Chou Earth (Chou Tu) is the second of the twelve Earthly Branches (Dizhi). Its element is Earth and its Yin-Yang polarity is Yin, making it damp-cold Earth. Chou month (the 12th lunar month, Minor Cold ~ Spring Begins) is positioned at the end of winter, when cold qi still prevails and the Earth qi is damp and cold. Chou is the Metal Storage (Mu Ku), with Hidden Stems (Cang Gan): Ji Earth (primary qi), Gui Water (secondary qi), and Xin Metal (residual qi).
Etymological Imagery
The Shuowen Jiezi explains Chou as: "A button. In the twelfth month, the ten thousand things stir and take up their duties." The Hanshu states: "They sprout in Chou." Chou means "button" — the seed swells slightly in the frozen earth; the embryo curls and twists, not yet breaking the shell but already straining it to its limit. The bitter cold has not yet ended; above ground, all is deathly silent; below ground, every single seed is wrestling with the frozen soil in the dark.
Chou's power is not eruption but accumulation. It is the most "patient" stage among the twelve Branches — not rushing to emerge, but silently storing strength in the harshest environment. Thus, Chou Earth individuals often do not show their hand openly, yet they possess astonishing endurance and resilience.
