Zi Water

Zi Water (Zi Shui) is Yang Water in the Five Elements, representing the essence of winter water, governing wisdom, circulation, and concealment, corresponding to the kidneys and bones.

Basic Properties of Zi Water

Zi Water (Zi Shui) is the first of the twelve Earthly Branches (Dizhi). Its element is Water and its Yin-Yang polarity is Yang, making it the pure Yang Water branch. Zi represents the state when winter's water qi is at its most vigorous (around the winter solstice). Its Hidden Stem (Cang Gan) is Gui Water, making it a pure representative of Water energy.

Etymological Imagery

The Shuowen Jiezi (Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters) explains Zi as: "In the eleventh month, Yang qi stirs; the ten thousand things are nourished." The Hanshu (Book of Han) states: "They begin to breed in Zi." Zi means "to breed" — a seed underground, saturated with water, has not yet broken through the soil but is already quietly stirring in the darkness. This is the starting point of all life: invisible, inaudible, yet that upward force is already fully stored.

Zi is the purest "Water" among the twelve Earthly Branches, because it represents the state prior to the birth of life — not emptiness, but fullness in waiting. Like an infant in the womb, like the ten thousand things underground, all possibilities are contained within the water.
