Hai Water

Hai Water (Hai Shui) is Yin Water in the Five Elements, containing Wood in its Growth stage, governing profound wisdom, broad inclusiveness, and quiet accumulation.

Basic Properties of Hai Water

Hai Water (Hai Shui) is the twelfth of the twelve Earthly Branches (Dizhi). Its element is Water and its Yin-Yang polarity is Yin, representing the stage when winter's Water qi begins to accumulate. Hai month (Winter Begins ~ Major Snow) marks the start of winter, with Water qi gradually intensifying. Hai is the Growth (Chang Sheng) of Jia Wood, with Hidden Stems (Cang Gan): Ren Water (primary qi) and Jia Wood (secondary qi).

Etymological Imagery

The Shuowen Jiezi explains Hai as: "The root. In the tenth month, the faint Yang rises to receive the flourishing Yin." The Hanshu states: "They are enclosed in Hai." Hai means "kernel" — life contracts back into the depths of the seed; everything returns to the origin. After Xu has extinguished, Hai condenses all remaining value into a single kernel: the outer flesh rots away, the kernel sinks into the soil, waiting for the next Zi Water to soak it, the next Chou Earth to store strength, the next Yin Wood to break the shell.

Hai is not an ending but the final link in the cycle. It guards the complete blueprint of the next spring in the darkness. Hence, Hai Water individuals may appear easygoing and detached, yet within they harbor profound foresight — they are "those who are good at waiting," because they know that after winter, spring is certain to come.
