Xu Earth

Xu Earth (Xu Tu) is Yang Earth in the Five Elements, containing the Fire Storage, governing dignified strength, protective guardianship, and the storage of Fire energy.

Basic Properties of Xu Earth

Xu Earth (Xu Tu) is the eleventh of the twelve Earthly Branches (Dizhi). Its element is Earth and its Yin-Yang polarity is Yang, making it dry-hot Earth. Xu month (Cold Dew ~ Winter Begins) is late autumn when Earth flourishes and Fire qi enters storage. Xu is the Fire Storage (Mu Ku), with Hidden Stems (Cang Gan): Wu Earth (primary qi), Xin Metal (secondary qi), and Ding Fire (residual qi).

Etymological Imagery

The Shuowen Jiezi explains Xu as: "To extinguish. In the ninth month, Yang qi is faint; the ten thousand things are fully completed; Yang descends into the earth." The Hanshu states: "They all enter in Xu." Xu means "to extinguish" — the splendor has drawn to a close, the ten thousand things wither. Grass and trees turn yellow, fallen leaves return to their roots; the lush greenery that once covered the mountains has all gone back into the earth. Xu's imagery is the dusk of late autumn: the setting sun like blood, the vast earth stretching into the dim distance, all the bustle now over.

Yet Xu is not desolate — it uses a fire (Xu is the Fire Storage) to burn dead branches and withered leaves to ashes, turning them into next year's fertilizer. Hence, Xu Earth individuals carry a fundamental quality of "duty fulfilled to the end": they protect, wrap up, and clean up, ensuring that every matter receives a dignified conclusion.
