What Is Fu Yin?
Fu Yin (Doubled Pillar) refers to a situation where the Stem-Branch of a Luck Cycle or Annual Luck is identical to the Stem-Branch of a pillar in the natal chart, creating a state of "overlap." The literal meaning of Fu Yin is "prostrating and groaning," symbolizing repression, grief, and stagnation. It indicates that matters tread water, cycle repetitively, and are difficult to break through.
Types of Fu Yin
- Annual Cycle Fu Yin with the natal chart: The Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch of a Luck Cycle or Annual Luck are completely identical to a natal chart pillar. For example, if the chart has Jia-Zi and the Luck Cycle also moves into Jia-Zi, this is Jia-Zi Fu Yin.
- Stem-only or Branch-only Fu Yin: When only the Stem repeats (or only the Branch repeats), there is also a Fu Yin effect, but the intensity is less than when both Stem and Branch are identical.
Symbolic Meanings of Fu Yin
| Fu Yin Pillar Position | Primary Symbolism |
|---|---|
| Year Pillar Fu Yin | Repetition of or distress from ancestral and childhood matters |
| Month Pillar Fu Yin | Stagnation and internal friction in parents, career, and work |
| Day Pillar Fu Yin | Repression and repetition affecting the Day Master and marriage |
| Hour Pillar Fu Yin | Hesitation and stagnation concerning children and later years |
Practical Effects of Fu Yin
- Grief and repression: During this phase, one may experience low mood and psychological pressure, with difficulty advancing matters.
- Treading water: The domains represented (career, relationships, etc.) struggle to achieve breakthroughs and may cycle within existing conditions.
- Internal struggle: Fu Yin carries the image of "self-dialogue," with inner entanglement and indecision.
Comparison of Fu Yin and Fan Yin
Fu Yin is repetition (identical); Fan Yin is head-on clash (mutual clash). Both are powerful modes of interaction. The intensity of Fan Yin is generally higher than Fu Yin, but the repressive feeling of Fu Yin is more prolonged and persistent.
