What Are Cold, Warm, Dry, and Damp?
Cold (Han), Warm (Nuan), Dry (Zao), and Damp (Shi) are the four fundamental climatic attributes of a BaZi chart, determined by the birth Month Command (Yue Ling) and the overall Five Element composition of the chart. The hot-cold and dry-damp state of the chart climate directly affects how the Five Elements' energy manifests, and serves as the foundation of Seasonal Adjustment (Tiao Hou) analysis.
Four Climatic Attributes
| Climatic Attribute | Five Element Origin | Representative Months |
|---|---|---|
| Cold (Han) | Abundant Water, Hai-Zi-Chou months | Winter (Hai, Zi, Chou) |
| Warm (Nuan) | Abundant Fire, Si-Wu-Wei months | Summer (Si, Wu, Wei) |
| Dry (Zao) | Abundant Fire & Earth, arid conditions | Summer-Autumn (Wu, Wei, Shen) |
| Damp (Shi) | Abundant Water & Earth, Water strong | Winter-Spring (Hai, Zi, Chou, Yin) |
Correspondence Between the Five Elements and Climate
| Element | Climatic Characteristic |
|---|---|
| Wood | Mild (spring) |
| Fire | Hot (summer) |
| Earth | Dry (center) |
| Metal | Cool (autumn) |
| Water | Cold (winter) |
Assessing a Chart's Climate
The chart climate is comprehensively evaluated with the Month Command as the primary factor, supplemented by the quantity of Five Elements in the Stems and Branches:
- Month Command: Determines the baseline climate of the birth season.
- Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches: Increase or decrease climate intensity (more Fire makes it hotter; more Water makes it colder).
- Five Element Proportions: Assess overall whether the Five Element distribution leans extremely toward a particular climate.
Cold, Warm, Dry, Damp and the Useful God
| Climate | Adjustment Direction | Main Useful Gods |
|---|---|---|
| Extremely cold | Needs warming | Bing Fire (priority), Ding Fire |
| Extremely hot | Needs moistening | Ren Water (priority), Gui Water |
| Extremely dry | Needs moistening | Ren Water, Gui Water, Jia Wood (generates Water) |
| Extremely damp | Needs warming & drying | Bing Fire, Wu Earth |
Charts with Mild Climate
When the Month Command falls in spring or autumn (Yin-Mao-Chen or Shen-You-Xu), the climate is mild and the demand for Seasonal Adjustment is not strong. The chart structure's Useful God takes the lead, with Tiao Hou serving only as a supplementary reference.
