Vapor Transformation Structure (Hua Qi Ge)

A structure based on the Five Heavenly Stem unions where the Day Master combines with another stem and transforms into a different Five Element. The chart follows the transformed deity in this Special Structure, of which there are five types.

What Is the Vapor Transformation Structure?

The Vapor Transformation Structure (Hua Qi Ge) is one of the Special Structures (Wai Ge), based on the transformation theory of the Five Heavenly Stem unions. There are five union-and-transformation relationships among the Heavenly Stems. When the Day Master participates in a union-and-transformation, and the chart's Seasonal Adjustment supports the transformed deity (i.e., the Month Command or other chart elements support the transformed deity), the Day Master transforms into a different Five Element, forming the Vapor Transformation Structure.

Formation Conditions for Vapor Transformation

  1. The Day Master and one of the union stems must both be in the chart: e.g., the Wood Transformation requires Ding and Ren in the same pillar or adjacent pillars
  2. The Month Command must support the transformed deity: The Wood Transformation requires being born in a strong Wood month (Yin or Mao), or the transformed deity has a strong branch foundation
  3. No element that controls the transformed deity is revealed in the Stems: If an element controlling the transformed deity is revealed, the transformation is not genuine (false transformation)

Favorable and Unfavorable for Vapor Transformation

Once the Vapor Transformation Structure is established, the transformed deity becomes the subject:

  • Favorable: The transformed deity's element and the element that generates the transformed deity
  • Unfavorable: The element that controls the transformed deity, and the Day Master's original element (since the Day Master has already transformed)

Genuine vs. False Transformation

  • Genuine Transformation: Conditions are strictly met, transformation is pure — the chart is analyzed based on the transformed deity. Following it brings great fortune.
  • False Transformation: Conditions are not fully met, the chart is in a semi-transformed state. The chart holder often experiences significant fluctuations in life, less clear-cut than either a genuine transformation or a genuine non-transformation.

Important Notes

The determination of Vapor Transformation Structures has historically been controversial. In practice, one must carefully analyze the specific chart and not make hasty determinations. False transformation cases are more common than genuine ones.
