Basic Attributes of Jia Wood
Jia (Jia) is the first of the ten Heavenly Stems. Its Five Element is Wood and its polarity is Yang. It represents the most rigid, upright form of Wood energy — a towering tree, a great pillar of timber.
Etymological Imagery
The Shuowen Jiezi explains Jia as: "The first of the east; Yang qi stirs and sprouts — the image of a plant bearing its seed shell." Jia is that instant when a seed cracks its husk and new life pushes upward through the hard shell — the birth of all things, unstoppable. Like the first tender shoot breaking through the soil in early spring, it has stored up the entire winter's energy; once the shell cracks, there is no turning back.
Jia's vitality is direct: it does not meander or detour. It thrusts straight upward. This straightforward quality is both Jia Wood's greatest strength and its limitation — it can become a pillar of the state, but it is ill-suited to become a delicate instrument.
