Extinction (Jue)

The tenth of the Twelve Growth Stages, where the Five Elements' qi dissipates entirely and form returns to nothingness — one of the weakest energy stages.

What Is Extinction (Jue)?

Extinction (Jue) is the tenth stage of the Twelve Growth Stages. It represents the state in which the Five Elements' qi has thoroughly dissipated, and form and substance have returned to void. Like ashes scattered and smoke dispersed — without form, without substance — it is among the most energy-depleted stages of the entire twelve-stage cycle (tied with Death).

Life Metaphor

Extinction is "a blank page." No words, no drawings, not even a crease. It is a thorough return to zero — not the storage of Grave (there are still things in the Grave), but the burning of the box itself. Within the logic of the Twelve Growth Stages, Extinction is not the endpoint but the blank space that precedes a new beginning. Only when everything is truly emptied can new things enter.

Those under Extinction often possess the courage to "start over from scratch." They are not people who triumph through accumulation — their strength comes from "letting go." Every return to zero is a rebirth, which is why Extinction is the most audacious breaker of deadlocks among the twelve stages. But the cost is this: they may become so accustomed to leaving that they no longer know how to stay.

Meaning of Extinction in Destiny Analysis

  • Extremely weak: The Five Element in the Extinction position has nearly vanished. When the Day Master occupies Extinction, the chart is extremely weak and can barely operate on its own strength.
  • Severance imagery: When a particular Ten God is in the Extinction position, the life domain that Ten God represents (wealth, office, offspring, etc.) may face severance or disruption.
  • Harbinger of reversal: Extinction is followed by Conception. The transition from Extinction to Conception is the shift from energy dispersed to energy newly gestating, sometimes presaging the complete end of old matters and the beginning of new ones.

Relationship Between Extinction and Conception

Extinction represents the complete zeroing-out of old energy; Conception represents the gestation of new energy. In the course of human destiny, encountering an Extinction-phase Luck Cycle may involve a thorough transformation in some area — releasing the old, welcoming the new. This is a process of breaking down before building up; it should not be simplistically interpreted as inauspicious.
