Basic Properties of Mao Wood
Mao Wood (Mao Mu) is the fourth of the twelve Earthly Branches (Dizhi). Its element is Wood and its Yin-Yang polarity is Yin, representing the stage when spring Wood qi is at its most vigorous (Wood's Imperial Prosperity / Di Wang position). Mao month (Awakening of Insects ~ Clear & Bright) is the height of spring, when the ten thousand things bloom profusely. Hidden Stem (Cang Gan): Yi Wood (primary qi).
Etymological Imagery
The Shuowen Jiezi explains Mao as: "To emerge. In the second month, the ten thousand things burst forth from the earth." The Hanshu states: "They emerge thickly in Mao." If Yin is the first shoot to break through, Mao is when thousands upon thousands of tender leaves burst out all at once — across mountains and plains, unstoppable. This is the most magnificent moment of spring: not the growth of a single tree, but the awakening of an entire forest.
If Yin's power is "priority," Mao's power is "abundance." It does not compete to be first; it makes everything bloom simultaneously. Hence, Mao Wood individuals often possess a natural affinity and charm — like a spring garden, making people instinctively want to draw near.
