Basic Properties of Chen Earth
Chen Earth (Chen Tu) is the fifth of the twelve Earthly Branches (Dizhi). Its element is Earth and its Yin-Yang polarity is Yang, making it moist Earth. Chen month (Clear & Bright ~ Summer Begins) is the late-spring period when Earth flourishes. Chen is the Water Storage (Mu Ku), with Hidden Stems (Cang Gan): Wu Earth (primary qi), Yi Wood (secondary qi), and Gui Water (residual qi).
Etymological Imagery
The Shuowen Jiezi explains Chen as: "To shake. In the third month, Yang qi stirs, thunder and lightning vibrate, it is the people's farming season." The Hanshu states: "They shake forth beautifully in Chen." Spring thunder roars, rain is abundant — this is the moment when the ten thousand things begin to "shoot upward." Plants are no longer satisfied with creeping along the ground but straighten their stems and surge upward — after every thunderstorm, the fields are transformed.
Chen is the most "tension-filled" node among the twelve Earthly Branches. It is like a reservoir fully charged with water, like a dragon brewing a storm within the clouds — on the surface, everything appears normal, but inside, latent momentum is ready to erupt. Hence, Chen Earth individuals often possess an extraordinary energy reserve: they may remain quiet, but when they finally act, they astonish everyone.
