Shen Metal (Shen Jin) is the ninth of the twelve Earthly Branches (Dizhi). Its element is Metal and its Yin-Yang polarity is Yang, representing the stage when autumn Metal qi first flourishes. Shen month (Autumn Begins ~ White Dew) begins the autumn harvest, with Metal qi gradually intensifying. Shen is the Growth (Chang Sheng) of Ren Water, with Hidden Stems (Cang Gan): Geng Metal (primary qi), Ren Water (secondary qi), and Wu Earth (residual qi).
Etymological Imagery
The Shuowen Jiezi explains Shen as: "Spirit. In the seventh month, Yin qi completes; the body extends and restrains itself." The Hanshu states: "They solidify in Shen." Shen means "body" — the ten thousand things have grown into their full forms; their physical bodies are now complete. Plants no longer grow, no longer blossom; all their nutrients have been delivered to the fruit. Wheat ears droop, fruit-laden branches bend — this is life's most "weighty" moment.
Shen's power is "completion." It marks the culmination of the growth cycle: no longer potential, no longer flourishing, but concrete results. Hence, Shen Metal individuals are obsessed with outcomes — what they value is not how hard you tried, but what you actually accomplished.
