Basic Properties of Wei Earth
Wei Earth (Wei Tu) is the eighth of the twelve Earthly Branches (Dizhi). Its element is Earth and its Yin-Yang polarity is Yin, making it dry-hot Earth. Wei month (Minor Heat ~ Autumn Begins) is late summer, when Earth flourishes and Fire qi is about to decline. Wei is the Wood Storage (Mu Ku), with Hidden Stems (Cang Gan): Ji Earth (primary qi), Ding Fire (secondary qi), and Yi Wood (residual qi).
Etymological Imagery
The Shuowen Jiezi explains Wei as: "Flavor. The sixth month is the time of flavors." The Hanshu states: "They are shaded and lush in Wei." Wei means "flavor" — the fruits begin to have taste. After the flowers have withered, the green fruits on the branches slowly plump up, gain color, and turn sweet. Wei's dry heat is not the scorching of Wu but ripening — like the sun in the dog days, baking the crops from green to gold.
Wei is the final waiting before harvest. It is not a sprint but a vigil. Hence, Wei Earth individuals often possess a gentle patience and a unique sense of taste — they do not rush, knowing that good things need time to mature.
