Basic Properties of Wu Fire
Wu Fire (Wu Huo) is the seventh of the twelve Earthly Branches (Dizhi). Its element is Fire and its Yin-Yang polarity is Yang; it is the Imperial Prosperity (Di Wang) ground of Fire qi — Fire at its extreme peak. Wu month (Grain in Ear ~ Minor Heat) is the hottest period of the year. Hidden Stems (Cang Gan): Ding Fire (primary qi) and Ji Earth (secondary qi).
Etymological Imagery
The Shuowen Jiezi explains Wu as: "To oppose. In the fifth month, Yin qi confronts Yang, bursting forth from the earth." The Hanshu states: "They beat and spread in Wu." Wu is the most subtle turning point among the twelve Branches — Yang qi reaches its zenith, yet precisely at this moment, a single thread of Yin quietly begins to grow. "Wu" means "to oppose": Yin and Yang cross and counter each other here. Just as the noon sun is brightest but signals the beginning of dusk; just as summer solstice has the longest day, after which every day grows shorter.
The extreme flourishing of Wu Fire subtly harbors the foreshadowing of retreat. Hence, Wu Fire individuals often radiate brilliance and passion, yet deep within carries an uneasy sensitivity — they vaguely know that after the brightest moment comes the descent.
