What This Article Is About
This is not describing who you are, but what kind of cognitive climate you are going through.
The Indirect Seal Cycle (Pian Yin Yun), whether a ten-year Luck Cycle (Da Yun) or a one-year Annual Luck (Liu Nian), does not mean you suddenly become an eccentric recluse. It means your cognitive light source has changed. Originally you found direction under the sun, in crowds, in others' feedback — Fe was your most familiar road. The Indirect Seal Cycle moves this lamp from the outside to the inside, from a large lamp to a small lamp: only enough to illuminate a small area right before your eyes.
For ISFJ, the Indirect Seal Cycle is the most unfamiliar of all Ten Gods (Shi Shen) cycles. Because your navigation system (Si-Fe) isnaturally outward-facing — toward past experiences, toward others' feelings, toward maintaining existing order. The Indirect Seal wants you to walk inward alone. What this article will clarify is: what this solitary lamp really is, how your Si-Fe-Ti-Ne operates on this inward path, and whether you are someone who canusing this lamp to see things others cannot, or someone who needs toguard against walking too deep and not being able to return.

What Is the Indirect Seal Cycle
The Ten Gods (Shi Shen) describe the direction of an energy's action, not a personality. The essence of Indirect Seal is same polarity, generates me: same nature as the Day Master (Ri Zhu), giving wisdom and insight, but what it gives is never mainstream textbook material — it gives you esoteric knowledge, unique realizations, things a group of people cannot see clearly in daylight but you, under the night lamp, see clearly.
Direct Seal (Zheng Yin) gives you an entire library — verified knowledge, recognized authorities, everything you can safely flip through while sitting in a chair. Indirect Seal gives you a solitary lamp. The illumination range is very narrow, but every detail it illuminates you see extremely deeply. You are not absorbing the light and knowledgelaid out by the big environment; you are yourself holding a lamp, walking alone on a side path others seldom travel.
Entering an Indirect Seal Cycle means this "solitary insight" energy is in a dominant position within your current destiny cycle. What it tests in you is not "can you think deeper," but "can you not panic when alone."
Duration:
- Major Cycle Indirect Seal: About ten years. Thinking style long-termleaning toward introspection, unconventional, deep solitude. You will become that person who "thinks of things others cannot think of."
- Annual Cycle Indirect Seal: About one year. A dense period of inward exploration; may manifest asalone studying an esoteric subject, a period requiringlarge amounts alone time, or a state of "others cannot understand it but you know what you are doing."
What ISFJ Encounters During an Indirect Seal Cycle
The most common sensation during this period is "The world has gone quiet — and I am standing alone in a very dark place, with only a small lamp in my hand."
What ISFJ is least accustomed to is solitude — not physical solitude, but a kind of internal solitude where "no one around you is on the same frequency as you." Your Fe is used to calibrating yourself in crowds; the Indirect Seal Cycle temporarily mutes the crowd.
Specific manifestations typically appear at the following levels:
Career and Learning
- The appeal of conventional paths suddenly drops. Those tasks of work, study, and daily routine that originally made you feelat ease — suddenly lost thesolid and steady feeling of "I am doing the right thing."
- You may start becoming fascinated by something esoteric and not very "useful." Not what career planning requires — your lamp has illuminated that corner; you have seen something others ignore, and you must figure out what it is.
- Team collaboration becomesespecially draining. Not that you cannot cooperate anymore; your thinking is currently on a side path — others are discussing Plan A, and you are pondering whether Plan A is based on a mistaken assumption.
Interpersonal
- Social desire drops to its lowest. Not because someone offended you — superficial socializing can no longercarry the cognitive weight of your current state. What you see under the lamp requires too long a preface to let another person walk into the same light.
- A "temperature gap" appears in relationships. You still love those you care about, but your way of giving has changed — you can no longer use Fe's default mode of proactively caring, of bustlingly participating. You seem to be far away, but you are really just in a very deep internal position.
- Some people start worrying about you. You are quieter than usual, less responsive, lesspresent in public spaces — and ISFJ's quietness is especially conspicuous in others' eyes, because you normally use care and presence to maintain relationships.
Internal
- Si's archive is re-cataloged by Indirect Seal. You startreview the past — not nostalgic, warmreview, but a deeperre-reinterpretation. Things you thought you already understood very well, under the Indirect Seal's lamplight, reveal new layers.
- Fe is temporarilytemporarily set aside. Not broken — the cognitive mode the Indirect Seal Cycle demands is not "connect outward," but "dive deep inward." You will for a period feel you seem not very good at caring for people anymore — not truly unable, but all your attention is internal.
- Ti is activated. Indirect Seal does not give you safe knowledge frameworks like Direct Seal; Indirect Seal gives youfractured questions — you must use your own Ti to connect them.
Important note: The Indirect Seal Cycle for ISFJ is both an opportunity to "walk out of Fe's inertia" and a risk of "being trapped in an internal maze." For the strong, this is a period of producing original cognition; for the weak, this is a period requiring regular returns to the crowd to breathe human air.
Key Judgment: Are You Strong or Weak?
Strong Day Master × Indirect Seal Cycle: Deep dive becomes pearl
For those with a sufficiently strong Day Master, the Indirect Seal Cycle does not push you into loneliness, but lets you gain in quietness insights that others in noise cannot obtain. Your Si, under the Indirect Seal's illumination, upgrades from "archival tool" to "reinterpretation tool" — you start seeing the implicit structures in experiences you hadoverlooked.
Typical signal: Solitude gives you more energy rather than more depletion; you develop impulses for deep research into esoteric questions; you can "see" the implicit patterns in complex information.
Weak Day Master × Indirect Seal Cycle: Deep dive becomes drifting
For those with insufficient Day Master strength, the Indirect Seal Cycle easily becomes "the person is gone, and no one knows where they went." Indirect Seal generates the body, giving you thinking energy is fine, but ISFJ's weakness often manifests as "loss of direction after losing external connection." Youindeed are thinking, but what you think is increasingly far from daily life.
Typical signal: Solitude time grows longer butoutput does not increase; not wanting to speak with anyone not because of anger but because "saying it ispointless to say"; immersed in thinking but not happy — like being trapped in a quiet place where only you exist.
Daily self-test: After a period of solitude, do you return to the crowd with new understanding, feelingmore fulfilled (tending strong), or more distant from the crowd, feeling the distance between you and them has grown larger (tending weak)?
How ISFJ's Cognitive Functions Operate During an Indirect Seal Cycle
Si (Dominant Introverted Sensing) × Indirect Seal Cycle
The Indirect Seal Cycle recalibrates Si. Normal Si is an archive — storing experiences well, categorizing well, retrieving when needed. Si in the Indirect Seal Cycle becomes a scanner — it no longer merelyreview experiences, butre- scans every memory from abrand-new angle.
When Strong: Si is upgraded by Indirect Seal. You discover your past is deeper than you imagined; every experience has a layer of meaning you did not understand at the time.
When Weak: Si easily gets lost in old memories. You are notreviewing; you arerumination — the same segment of the pastflipped too many times, eachflipped digs up newconfusion, but not oneconfusion is truly resolved.
Fe (Auxiliary Extraverted Feeling) × Indirect Seal Cycle
This is the most heavily impacted function. The Indirect Seal Cycle demands youwithdraw attention from the outside, and Fe's nature is outward. ISFJ in the Indirect Seal Cycle will experience a period of "aphasia" — it is not that you do not want to care about others, but your cognitive mode temporarily no longer matches Fe's immediate response pattern.
When Strong: Fe learns deeper listening. You no longer only care for surface needs, but start understanding why a person has such needs.
When Weak: Fe entersdormant. You no longer proactively care, no longer proactivelymediate — not because of coldness, but because all energy has beenpulled away by internal activities.
Ti (Tertiary Introverted Thinking) × Indirect Seal Cycle
Indirect Seal is Ti's accelerator. ISFJ's Ti normally has theforeground occupied by Fe and Si, rarely having independent operation opportunities. The Indirect Seal Cycle temporarilymoved the default modes of Si and Fe backward a bit, leaving space for Ti.
When Strong: Ti develops rapidly. You start systematically understanding things — not just "this experience tells me it is this way," but "what is the logical chain behind this experience."
When Weak: Ti's operation lacks external calibration — you think of many logical chains; each one internally looks correct, but they may contradict each other. Without Fe bringing you back to reality, without Se helping you calibrate, Ti easily walks into a loop that is self-consistent butnot necessarily accurate.
Ne (Inferior Extraverted Intuition) × Indirect Seal Cycle
The most dangerous impact of the Indirect Seal Cycle is here. Indirect Sealnaturally makes thinking lean narrow and deep; Ne under pressurewill again magnify negative possibilities. ISFJ in the Indirect Seal Cycle may experience a unique anxiety: it is not "many people do not like me" (Fe-style), but "what I am thinking aboutmay is completelydivorced from reality, understandable to no one, maybe even fabricated by myself" (Ne-styledoubting of one's own cognition).
What Others See vs. What You Are Actually Going Through
What Others See
- ·Disappeared — not physically, but it just feels like the person is not there
- ·Become very "strange"; concerned with things different from others
- ·Quieter than before, and harder to "see through"
- ·Seems to have lost interest in relationships; no longer proactively cares about people
- ·Life rhythmdisrupted; day and nightblurred, three mealsirregular
What You Are Actually Going Through
- ·Not disappeared — temporarily not needing external connection to confirm your own existence; this state is completely new to you, but you are learning its value
- ·Not become strange — your lamp has illuminated the edges of the system; those places where only a few have been, but they deserve to be illuminated
- ·Not harder to see through — your current layer of thinking is in the internal deep sea; it needs too many stairs to move to the ground
- ·Not lost interest in relationships — your Fe currently has no spare electricity; it isdormant in the background, and willre- come online after this period passes
- ·Not lifein disarray — internal activity is too dense; external signals have been temporarily noise-reduced — butguard against noise reduction does not equal can cut off
Collaboration and Relationships: When the Lamp Only Illuminates You
The Indirect Seal Cycle not only changes your way of thinking, but also changes the way you let others in.
- What you give is silence; what the other receives is rejection. You are just temporarily without spare energy tospread on tone and expression, but the other — especially those who care deeply about you — will read your quietness as "they are distancing from me."
- What you give is depth; what the other receives is pressure. You occasionally speak an insight thought about for a long time, but the other does not know how totake on — because your path went throughlong and winding and winding internal deduction, and the other only sees the conclusion, not the road.
- What you give is space; what the other receives is not caring. In the Indirect Seal Cycle you naturally reduce social frequency, leaving more space for relationships. But for those accustomed to you using Fe tomaintain connection them, space is distance.
The relationship lesson in the Indirect Seal Cycle is not "how should Ireturn to being the original me," but: during these days when I temporarily cannot give so much warmth, can I still let those who care about me know — I have not stopped loving; I am just staying in a very deep place for a while.
5 Signals You Have Been in the Dark Room Too Long
1. From deep thinking to thinking addiction. You are not solving problems; you are enjoying the feeling of "solving problems." One looptake on another loop, no exit — but every loop makes you feel "I am doing important things."
2. From selective quietness to fearing crowds. At first just "not wanting to talk," later became "not knowing how to talk," finally became "wanting to hide at the sight of anyone."
3. Fromre- understanding the past to being trapped by the past. Si'srumination is no longer to understand — it is to confirm that your pain is justified.
4. From psychological independence to physicalisolation. The room doorno longer opened; windowsno longer opened; messagesno longer replied. Not deliberatelygoing off-grid — opening any external channel feels too bright, too noisy.
5. Body and life rhythm slowly collapsing. Mealscannot be bothered make; sleep whenever want; daylight and nighttime darkness already make no difference to you.
If these signals appear, you do not need to immediately "figure out" something — you need to first let a ray of real sunlight in. Even if just opening the window and sitting for ten minutes.
Strong ISFJ: How to Make Good Use of This Period
The Indirect Seal Cycle for Strong ISFJ is an opportunity to gain unique cognitive depth.
Shine the lamp on domains you always "felt something about" but never investigated deeply
Thoseblurred files in your Si — things you "always felt something was off" but neverinvestigated — the Indirect Seal Cycle is precisely for investigating them deeply.
Let Ti build frameworks during this period
Normally Fe occupies too much of your cognitiveforeground. Take advantage of the Indirect Seal Cycle to practice Ti.re- assemble the experiences you collected through Si using logic — not to overturn experience, but to let you use experience more precisely later.
Maintain at least one external channel — not for others, but for calibration
Chat with one person you trust at least once a week. Not to report, not seeking approval — just to give your dark-room thinking an echo from the real world.
Weak ISFJ: How to Make Good Use of This Period
Indirect Seal for you is generating support — it is giving you energy you did not have before. Do not treat it as a burden, but walk with navigation.
Use this energy to learn something you always wanted to touch but felt "not qualified" for
Indirect Seal generates the body — you have strength now. Use this strength on something deep, esoteric, without anyutilitarian purpose for learning. Not to show others — for yourself. In this cornerexclusively to you, become its expert.
Set a fixed rhythm for "returning to the human world"
Eat breakfast at the same time every morning; see a fixed person at a fixed time each week. Not forcing yourself to socialize — using fixed rhythm to leave a door in your dark room that can be pushed open at any time.
Write your thoughts down — not for publication, but for seeing yourself
Thoughts in Indirect Seal easily self-loop. Write them somewhere — anywhere — as long as you can look back and see "oh, this is what I was thinking about last time." This can break manyoverthinking spirals loops.
Three Stages of the Indirect Seal Cycle
Entry Phase
You begin to feel voices becoming distant. Not that otherstruly decreased — your attention has startedwithdraw from the outside. ISFJ will feeluneasy in this stage — Fe protests. The most important thing in this stage is to allow yourself totry a period of "not socare about" state, not rushing to drag yourself back to the crowd.
Depth Phase
This is the most immersed time. Your Sire- scans experiences; Fedormant; Ti works overtime. Strong ISFJ here is most creative; Weak ISFJ here most needs external calibration points — even if just a reminder ringing at a fixed time each day, letting you know "it is evening now."
Integration Phase
The lamp begins to slowly dim. Your Fe willre- come online — you will discover your feelings for people are still there, even morenuanced than before. The focus of this stage isreview: which things you saw under the lamp were real, which were just overthinking. Put the real ones into the Si archive; leave the false ones in the dark room.
Major Cycle Indirect Seal vs. Annual Cycle Indirect Seal
Major Cycle Indirect Seal (about ten years)
This is not merely a period of quietness — it is a long-termturn of your entire cognitive mode. Strong Day Master in Major Cycle Indirect Seal: build a cognitive depth others cannot enter. Weak Day Master in Major Cycle Indirect Seal: Indirect Seal generating the body is long-term nourishment — but requires you to proactively establish external anchor points; otherwise ten years may become "deeper and deeper, narrower and narrower" private ground.
Annual Cycle Indirect Seal (about one year)
One year thinking about one thing. For ISFJ, the Annual Indirect Seal often appears in the form of "a certain question I just cannot let go." It is not necessarily bad — many ISFJs this way, within a period, force themselves to see through the essence of something. Just need to remember: once understood, still return to life.
Growth Lessons in the Indirect Seal Cycle
- Learn to enjoy the density of solitude — but keep the road out of the dark room. You are not escaping crowds; you are learning a new cognitive mode. But always leave yourself a door.
- Speak what you have understood — even if just to one person. The biggest waste in the Indirect Seal Cycle is those insights without an outlet.
- Fe will not break. Many ISFJs in the Indirect Seal Cycle fear most "will I never again be able to care about people." No. Fe was just temporarily turned down in volume, not deleted.
After Exiting the Indirect Seal Cycle
When the Indirect Seal Cycle ends, you will discover yourself walking out of a door that was long unopened.
Outside has not changed, but you have changed. Your way of seeing people is deeper than before — notdoubting deeper, but understanding deeper. You discover your intuition about certain things is more accurate than before. Your Si has been upgraded — it not only stores experiences, but can see the structures beneath experiences.
Strong, having come through: you take away a unique internal cognitive system — things others rely on external frameworks to understand, you can figure out clearly in darkness.
Weak, having come through: you take away a precious ability of "not fearing solitude" —previously you needed crowds to confirm yourself; now you know you can stand steady alone.
What most needs to be done after exiting the Indirect Seal Cycle is to bring what you took out of the dark room into daytime life. Not all of it — select the one most worth it, let it be seen in the sunlight. Your lamp does not need to go out; it only needs to move from the dark room to the windowsill.
