Decline (Shuai)

The sixth of the Twelve Growth Stages, where the Five Elements' qi begins to recede, like the turn from prosperity to decline in middle age — energy heading downhill.

What Is Decline (Shuai)?

Decline (Shuai) is the sixth stage of the Twelve Growth Stages — the phase after the Five Elements' qi has crossed the Imperial Prosperity summit and begins its downward trajectory. Like a person entering middle age, vitality starts to wane; although considerable strength remains, the cutting edge of Imperial Prosperity is gone, and the trend has shifted from flourishing to fading.

Life Metaphor

Decline is not failure — it is "no longer straining." The three-o'clock afternoon sun no longer scorches, yet it is perfectly suited to brewing a pot of tea. Decline is life's first reconciliation with oneself: no longer needing to prove anything, no longer fighting tooth and nail for every opportunity, beginning to learn the word "let it go."

Decline's core emotional tone is a subtle blend of loss and relief. You find you can no longer run as fast as before, but oddly — you no longer want to run that fast, either. Thus, those under Decline often possess the gentle wisdom of someone who has "been there": they once stood at the summit, so they are in no hurry to climb; they have seen the finest views, so they know to pause and notice the flowers by the roadside.

Meaning of Decline in Destiny Analysis

  • Moderately weak: The strength of a Heavenly Stem in the Decline position is moderately weak — no longer the extreme peak of Imperial Prosperity, but residual force still remains.
  • Turning-point signal: Decline is the starting point of the turn from strong to weak. Its appearance in a chart or Luck Cycle often presages that a particular career, relationship, or health condition has begun its downward trend.
  • Day Master in Decline: When the Day Master is in Decline, the chart is moderately weak; comprehensive assessment should integrate other Root Connection conditions.

Positional Meaning Within the Twelve Growth Stages

Decline sits after Imperial Prosperity and before Sickness, marking the start of the descending phase. From Imperial Prosperity → Decline → Sickness → Death → Grave → Extinction is a continuous process of energy diminishment. Though Decline has begun to recede, it still retains a substantial foundation — compared with the subsequent Death and Extinction stages, it remains a moderate state.
